This little piece of pottery can fill in an open place on a shelf, or hold a small bouquet of flowers, or used as a creamer. It holds a little under 1/2 cup of liquid.  Of course, it is microwave, food and dishwasher safe.

Pottery that is alike always look best in a group.  These flasks each slightly different in size will brighten a dull corner or can be a lovely center piece for a kitchen table or coffee table.  It’s fine to add some fresh cut wildflowers and grasses, as the pots can hold water safely.  They are dishwasher, microwave and food safe.

Two clays marbelized to create body of piece.  All parts made from pinch pots.  Lid carved to add interest to the overall piece.

What is a pinch pot?  It’s one of the many ways in which clay can be manipulated to create a piece of pottery.  In the case of this pot, I made two bowl shapes, put them together for the main body.  Then paddled it to smooth and firm up the seam.  I cut the lid, much the same way as cutting a pumpkin for a Jack o Lantern.  Then two small pinched pieces were made for the pedistal and the lid topper.  Pinch pots are difficult to control as it takes some thought at the beginning regarding what you want to end up with.  If you pinch too much sideways, you lose the tall bowl shape and end  up with a shallow bowl or plate.  I did not get proficient at making the pinch pot until I had to teach it at the Old Wortendyke Station Studio in Midland Park, NJ.

As the Marbelized Carved Lid Pot, this is also made of pinch pots.  Two pinch pots put together for the body of the pot, but different from the Marbelized Carved Lid Pot, because the pedistal and the lid topper are made of leaf forms, as well as some leaf decorations around the handle.  The spout was carved out of the body and formed also formed into a leaf.  The glazes were layered and turned out beautifully.

As a potter, testing glaze effects is a big part of making pottery.  I like to use my little pieces for glaze tests, if they turn out badly, then I keep it around.  If they turn out beautiful, then I sell them or give them away for someone else to enjoy.

These were created with ornaments in mind.  These can be hung as unique ornaments on a Christmas tree or in a window or in a small space on a wall.   My inspiration was miniature plates I had seen at a craft store with ribbons woven into carved holes around the rims.

Here are two more successfully glazed pottery pieces.  I was so impressed by the soft glowing colors when they came out of the kiln.

In case it is not obvious, I enjoy nature and natural forms.  We had a holly bush in our front yard and I took a leaf and pressed it into the clay and created these ornaments.  I pinched off the wet clay around the leaves in order to keep the sharp pointed form of the  holly leaves.  I used a metalic gold marker to create the “faux” gold leafing on the edges and the berries.
